In comes another married lover of hers and shoots himself in front of them. The book opens with a scene in a restaurant where Joan is dining with a married lover. The protagonist, Joan, could be seen as the fourth woman: indeed, many of the true stories that didn’t make it into Three Women coalesced to inspire the character. In her first novel, Animal, Taddeo has gone even rawer and darker.
